Relevant support article

If your issue wasn’t resolved by following a support article, continue to the next section.

Try quick troubleshooting steps

  1. Inspect the display for liquid damage. Contact with liquid can short internal circuits and cause the display to stop working.

  2. Remove any cases, covers, or screen protectors.

  3. Check the top center front and back of the display enclosure to ensure that the two TrueTone ambient light sensor (ALS) openings are free of dust, debris, or other obstructions. If these areas are covered, such as by placing objects like stickers or sticky notes on top of them, this could adversely affect display quality.

  4. Refer to steps and support resources in Troubleshooting Quick Checks to verify display power and clean the display.

Run diagnostic tests

If your issue wasn’t resolved by following a support article or checking for potential causes, run these diagnostic tests to help isolate the cause of the issue:

  1. Run the Display Resource Inspector (DRI) diagnostic suite.

    • Note: This diagnostic test suite checks for the presence of the USB interfaces and cameras, and tests the functionality of the speakers, microphones, and camera.

  2. Run the Display Anomalies diagnostic suite to check for stuck or dead pixels. Inspecting the display during diagnostics, which uses various display images, can help expose and identify cracks within the display or display damage.

Open and inspect the display

If your issue wasn’t resolved or isolated by following support articles or running diagnostics tests, refer to the display's repair manual to open and inspect the display. A damaged or out-of-place part may be causing one of the issues.

Danger

Avoid touching any exposed power supply areas when AC power is applied.

  1. Follow repair manual procedures to open the display.

  2. Refer to the repair manual to locate and interpret the diagnostic LEDs on the logic board.

  3. Connect the display’s AC power cord to a known-good AC outlet.

  4. Locate the diagnostic LED button on the logic board. Press it to activate the LEDs. There should be at least one LED illuminated, showing that the power supply is producing DC trickle power. If no LEDs activate, the cause of the problem is likely to be the AC power cord, AC inlet, or power supply.

  5. A functioning display that is connected to AC power and a host computer with an active video signal will be ON and AWAKE. LEDs 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 should activate in this case.

  6. If all LEDs are active and the display doesn't show any image, the problem is likely to be the display or cable connections to it.

  7. If the issue is resolved or inspection reveals no issues, complete the reassembly. If diagnostic results or inspection identified a faulty part, continue to the next section. If the issue persists without identifying a specific part, continue to the next section for logic board replacement.

Note: This section requires ordering parts and tools. Replacing a part may not resolve the display's issue. You can find other service options at support.apple.com/repair.

Replace the part

If the issue wasn’t resolved or isolated by following the previous steps, replace the following parts for each relevant issue:

  • If you find damage to the USB-C ports or if the issue is isolated to the USB-C ports, replace the affected USB-C board.

  • If you find damage to an internal display cable or if the issue is isolated to an internal display cable, replace the affected display cable.

  • If testing identifies a faulty display, ambient light sensor, or camera, replace the display, which contains these parts.

  • If no specific faulty part was identified above, replace the logic board.

Repair completion

If the display or logic board was replaced, refer to the repair manual for instructions to run System Configuration to configure the replacement display or logic board.

Post-repair verification

Run the following diagnostic suites after the repair:

  • Display Resource Inspector (DRI) (to test overall functionality)

  • Display Anomalies

After the repair is completed, verify that the display, backlight, camera, and ambient light sensor are functioning normally.

Note: This section requires ordering parts and tools. Replacing a part may not resolve the display's issue. You can find other service options at support.apple.com/repair.

Troubleshooting camera or ambient light sensor issues

Identify issues

  • Camera doesn’t function

  • No camera indicator light

  • Overexposed images

  • Poor white balance

  • Poor focus

  • Distorted or discolored images

  • Display brightness doesn’t respond to changing ambient light conditions

  • Camera doesn’t respond to changing ambient light conditions

Try quick troubleshooting steps

  1. Inspect the display for liquid damage. Contact with liquid can short internal circuits and cause the display to stop working.

  2. Remove any cases, covers, or screen protectors.

  3. There are two TrueTone ambient light sensors (ALS) on this display. Check the top left corner of the display bezel and the leaf of the Apple logo on the housing to ensure that the two TrueTone ALS openings are free of dust, debris, or other obstructions. If these areas are covered, such as by placing objects like stickers or sticky notes on top of them, this could adversely affect display quality.

  4. Refer to steps and support resources in Troubleshooting Quick Checks to verify display power and clean the display.

  5. Verify the camera lens area at the top of the display is clear of contaminants. Some cleaning solutions leave behind a film that could impact camera image quality. Thoroughly clean the top of the display surface using only a damp cloth. Then try to reproduce the issue.

  6. Open Photo Booth on the connected Mac or iPad. Verify that the indicator light next to the camera lights up. Verify that the image looks normal.

Run diagnostic tests

If your issue wasn’t resolved by following a support article or checking for potential causes, run these diagnostic tests to help isolate the cause of the issue:
